How to use Stockbook Live Entry for Mothering Up

For the 'Mothering Up' function to appear, the lambs/calves cannot already exist in Stockbook

If using Electronic tags, they can exist in the Unallocated Tag List.

      Step 1. Open Live Entry

Click on the Live Entry toolbar icon to open

      Step 2. Selecting an Activity

  • Click on down arrow  to select an Activity from the drop down list
  • You are provided with three default activities for Induction, Preg Test and Weighing.
These default activities have data entry and quick add templates pre-set for the particular activities
  • Click on the START LIVE ENTRY button

Step 3. Setting up the Layout

  1. Setup the Layout to show the information that you want to see about the Dam when mothering up. These might include things like ProgenyJoiningsPreg Tests etc
  2. Go to View > Data Windows.
  3. Tick the appropriate windows.

  • You don't need to add anything to the Data Entry Template section when mothering up

      Step 4. Data Entry Template

  • Click on the Setup
  • Data Entry Template
  • Deselect all  Fields in the Selected Options column
  • The Selected Options column should be empty
  • Click on the OK button
  • Click yes to the warning

  • Click Save Layout  and save this Layout as Mothering Up (You can't overwrite the default templates, you must choose a new name)
  • Click OK button

       Step 5. Adding Animal Template

  1. Click on Setup
  2. Add Animal Template

       Step 6. Selecting Items

Select the items that you would like collect data for when adding a calf or a lamb
Some useful hints:
  • A lot of these fields will 'hold' for each new calf / lamb. Put fields that you don't want to change each time down the bottom
  • Don't choose Electronic Id if you don't use EID tags
  • If you want Stockbook to generate a 16 digit 'SG ID' you will need to select Breed and Flock/Herd
  • If you are recording Number Reared it is found under Traits
  • You can record sire, but shouldn't need to if you have correctly entered joinings and preg tests for your females. Stockbook will calculate the sire if it has been done correctly. Test this before making a decision here

         Click on the OK button

Click Save Layout down the bottom of the screen

  • You will be asked if you want to overwrite the existing activity (Mothering Up). This means that it will save the changes you have just made to this template

  • Under the General tab, select Mother Up
Some useful hints:

  • If you are assigning a sire of the calf/lamb, you can go to the Restricted Lists tab and select the relevant sires (this means you won't have to scroll through all the males you have in Stockbook).

Once you have finished setting your session defaults click on OK.

  1. You will be asked if you want to overwrite the existing activity (Mothering Up). This means that it will save the changes you have just made to this template

      Step 9. Start the Process

You are now ready to start mothering up

      If using Electronic Tags:

  1. Scan the EID of the Dam. She will appear on the screen and you can view information about her
  2. Scan the EID of the lamb/calf. The Quick Add screen will appear and you will be able to add data in for the lamb/calf
The dam that was just scanned will appear in the 'Dam' field. Please check this. If the lamb/calf EID's have been imported onto the Unallocated Tag List, then you can leave the Primary ID field blank and it will be filled out from the Unallocated Tag List.
  1. Click Save or press F5 to save the lamb/calf
If adding twins, then scan the next lamb/calf and the dam will stay the same.

The dam that was just entered will appear in the Dam field. Please check this
  1. Click Save or press F5 to save the lamb/calf
  2. If adding twins, then click on the Quick Add button again and the dam will stay the same
